A Weekend Beach Retreat on a Budget

7/17/2014

Miriam Ansell Decorator Beach Retreat on a BudgetRemodeled Beach Retreat
This two bedroom condo on the water has a spiral staircase up to a second floor loft which also serves as a guest room.  We kept the white walls, white ceramic floor and white carpeting.

The ultra-suede sectional sofa with a one-arm chaise is in royal blue with  melon color throw pillows.  The swivel club chair has a white pillow with a melon fish design.  Three multi-purpose ottomans sit in front of the sofa in different shapes of faux leather patterned fabrics. They can be used as serviceable space for entertaining or for additional seating. The white hexagon ottoman has box quilted sides and a smooth leather surface as do the other two, one in a round blue faux leather and one in grass cloth faux leather.

The patterned area rug with an argyle background has needlepoint framed pictures of seafaring vessels some outlined in the same melon accent color throughout the room.  The beach theme paintings with the melon color in the fencing were reframed using the same warm wood color from the loft railing . The  chaise throw on the ottoman pulls together the use of the melon.

The white wood TV cabinet was redesigned by adding frosted glass which would be compatible with your remote controls. A bar server by the entry door was originally in the basement and brightened by repainting it in white.

The spiral staircase has white carpeting wrapped around each floating step. The second floor loft is furnished as a guest room which leads out to the deck for a view of the river. The existing high hat lighting under the loft space and a white lamp are the only lighting sources in this room.

The only items purchased by the designer and the client were the area rug, the ottomans, pillows, throw, and frosted glass in the TV cabinet.  The designer searched extensively for the appropriate area rug for the beach theme. The paintings were reframed with warm color wood that picks up the wood railing in the loft and the lightness of the driftwood that sits on the fireplace hearth.

A Sleek and Sophisticated Black and White Kitchen Remodel

5/15/2014

PictureContemporary Kitchen Remodel
Any kitchen can take on that “sophisticated” style and be affordable.  The homeowner kept her existing furniture: black flip-top extension table, black chairs with indoor/outdoor woven fabric and 2 counter height stools with the same  fabric. We retained the white ceramic tile floors, white walls and white window treatments. Now for the transformation of the cabinetry to take on a more contemporary look.

As a consultant on this remodel, we chose black kitchen cabinetry with white frosted glass in the upper cabinets which reflects the translucency of the white, clear and frosted glass tile backsplash. The cabinet lights project a soft interior glow as well as reflect the filtered room light.

We attached a round glass counter height table with a ribbed chrome pedestal to the island. The rounded glass and the rounded fixture softened the rectangular aspect of the room. The black portion of the round black and white fabric lighting fixture is placed directly over the rounded glass tabletop. The white portion is smaller in dimension and trimmed in black for more impact. This lighting fixture coalesces the black and white color scheme while adding more light to the now extended island.  The accessories bring in the colors from the family room.
